The Government of Canada offers the option of applying for permanent residence as a self-employed person.

In order to be eligable for this process, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Relevant Experience: You are eligable if:
    • you have taken part in cultural activities, or athletics at a world-class level; or
    • you have been self-employed in cultural activities or athletics; or
    • you have experience managing a farm.
  • Intention: You are eligible if you intend to be self-employed within Canada.
  • Selection Criteria: You are eligibile if you meet the CIC's selection criteria, which include measures of experience, education, age, language abilities, and adaptability.
  • Medical, Security and Other Conditons: You are eligible if you and your family members pass a medical exam, acquire police certificates (criminal and security checks), and can demonstrate that you have enough money to support yourselves upon arrival.

Immigrant Investors

The Goverment of Canada now offers an option for investors looking to integrate into Canadian society and contribute to its economy. If you are a professional investor, then you may be eligable to acquire permanant residence through the Immigrant Investor Venture Capital (IIVC) pilot program.

In order to be eligable for this program, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Net Worth: Applicants must have a personal net worth of CDN $10,000,000 or more. Proof of this net worth must be provided in the form of a due diligance report, and it must be demonstrated that these funds have been acquired through lawful, private sector business or investment activities.
  • Language Skills: Applicants must be proficient in English or French in all four language abilities (speaking, reading, listening, and writing), and must the original language tests when they apply.
  • Education: Applicants must have completed a Canadian post-secondary degree, diploma or certificate of at least one year; or a foreign equivalent, as validated by an original Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) report from a CIC-designated organization.
  • Admissibility: Applicants must be deemed to be admissible. Applicants may be deemed as inadmissible if they have engaged in criminal activity, human rights violations, or organized crime. Applicants may also be deemed inadmissible for security, health or financial reasons.
  • Non-Guaranteed Investment in the IIVC Fund: Applicants must make a non-guaranteed investment in the IIVC Fund, and hold this investment for 15 years.
